Crystal Blaylock-Sanchez
“We’ve been impressed with the work that the Diabetes Research Institute does in its laboratories at the University of Miami School of Medicine” states Crystal Blaylock-Sanchez. “If funding from the Shell Key West Challenge can help them find a cure for diabetes, nothing would make us happier.”

Welcome to the Shell Key West Challenge!

About Us
Since 1989, an avid group of anglers has fished the Shell Key West Challenge for trophies and bragging rights. The tournament brings together Shell executives, jobbers, employees, and corporate sponsors for three days of fun, relaxation, and heated competition in the waters surrounding the Florida Keys. In the Gulfstream, anglers score points by catching marlin, sailfish, dolphin, wahoo, tuna, amberjack, and bonito. Along the reefs they fish for barracuda, mackerel, shark, grouper, snapper, and cobia. And with light tackle they pursue tarpon and permit. No matter who ends up catching the most fish and scoring the most points, the big winner is the Diabetes Research Institute, which received a $110,000 donation from the Shell Key West Challenge last year.

Origins

Founded in 1989 by Hayden and Jo Blaylock of Homestead-based Blaylock Oil Company, the Shell Key West Challenge has donated more than $1.9 million to charity in the past 19 years. The tournament beneficiary is the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI), which is internationally renowned for its work in islet cell transplantation. The DRI leads the way in cellular therapies aimed at restoring insulin production and reversing diabetes in those who suffer with the disease.
